I began my artistic career as a novice photographer in 2008. Seduced by images I found on Tumblr and the CobraSnakes captures of the LA nightlife, I would sit in my DC apartment alone at night after a full day at my engineering job dreaming of a life I saw through those photo blogs. It was around that time I decided to invest in my first DSLR (a canon rebel) and started taking it out with me on weekends with friends into the DC nightlife. I had a blackberry pearl at the time and phone photos were nowhere near what they are today, bringing a camera out at night was a commitment. Coupled with copious amounts of alcohol, the hunt for a great photo relied on instinct and anticipating a moment rather than creating one. I have a lot of shitty photos from that time period but it was an important one that helped me develop my eye. Those blurry late night photos and experiences gave me the confidence to get out there and create work and capture the world through my lens. I ended up quitting my job the following year and two years later through circumstance and fate I relocated to Los Angeles for a work opportunity as a product photographer at District Millworks in the heart of the LA arts district exactly where a lot of the photos I once dreamed of were shot. This photo is from the start of that journey in 2008. I photographed these 2 sisters on at a New Years party almost 20 yrs ago at my childhood home before it became Bahrhaus. It’s not only a unique work from my archive, but also a full circle as it now hangs at BahrHaus all these years later.
